Prevent Duty

At St John Fisher, our safeguarding and child protection responsibilities include supporting the government’s Prevent Strategy.

Since July 2015, all schools have been required to comply with Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. This legislation places a duty on schools to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.” This is known as the Prevent Duty.

We are committed to fostering a strong safeguarding culture, which is a shared responsibility among all staff members. Safeguarding against radicalisation is treated with the same level of importance as safeguarding against any other form of harm or vulnerability. At St John Fisher, we help pupils build resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British Values and encouraging them to think critically and challenge extremist beliefs.

The statutory guidance highlights the need for staff to receive Prevent awareness training. This training helps staff identify pupils who may be at risk of radicalisation and equips them to respond appropriately.
