Forest School

June 2025

Year 2 had a fantastic final Forest School session. They got to play games, learn how to make seed balls using soil, flour and seeds and then enjoyed toasting marshmallows. A big thank you to Debbie, their wonderful Forest School leader, for delivering such exciting sessions!

In Forest School this week, Year 2 celebrated World Bee Day, appreciating the vital role bees play in pollinating our plants! We kicked off with a nectar race, where teams collected nectar from their flower and brought it back to the hive. Each team had a queen bee who praised her worker bees and measured their nectar collection! We also crafted our own fuzzy bee on a stick and took them to visit our blooming flowers. Over the past few weeks, we observed our caterpillars undergo metamorphosis into butterflies, and today we decided to release them, waving them off as they took flight!

Year 2 Forest School: A Perfect Day for a Butterfly Adventure. It was the ideal day for a butterfly hunt and a trip to Woodlands. It was brimming with buttercups, offering a chance to explore the fascinating life cycle of butterflies. We crafted our own butterfly wings using chromatography to create stunning blends of shapes and colours. After adding our antennae, we set off to search for nectar among the buttercups! With our identification sheets in hand, we spotted various butterflies nestled in the hedges. We even tried on some wings and took flight through the tall, wavy grass!

April 2025

Today year 2 children enjoyed learning about wild flowers in forest School. They were lucky enough to spot quite a few including: Cow Parsley, Herb Robert, Forget Me Nots, Dead Nettles and Bluebells. We agreed that it was important to only take a flower if there were enough left for the bees! We also looked at how our food grows and explored all the different parts of plant that we eat. We enjoyed finding the seeds in some fruits and vegetables! It was also amazing to see our pair of coal tit birds busily nesting in our bird box and returning with food to their nest!

Year 2 enjoyed their first Forest School session today. They spoke about the rules of forest school, had a challenging game of hide and seek and then delved into the world of plants. The children created their own giant plants using natural materials and then explored the inside of some tulips. The children also planted trees for our future in the awe and wonder garden, finally they ended with the campfire and goodbye song!
