The author Beverley Naidoo came to speak to our Year 5 and Year 6 classes. The children have read her book 'Journey to Jo'burg' in class. The background of the story is South Africa during the apartheid years. It is about poverty in South Africa and the experiences of a young black girl growing up and the challenges she faces.
Mrs Naidoo talked about her own experiences growing up in South Africa and how she was inspired to write the book. As a student she began to question the apartheid regime and became part of the resistance movement. At the age of 21 she was imprisoned for her beliefs for eight weeks.
This was a really wonderful opportunity to bring the story to life and to find out more about that time.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
